Most people know what Acid Reflux or the medical term for it- GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) is having experienced it during some part of their life. You would rarely find anyone who has not experienced it at least once in their lifetime. However, what most people are not aware of are the types of GERD that occur. You see, Heartburn can be due to different types of of Acid Reflux. Let us see these different types of GERD:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): This is the most common type of acid reflux and is mostly not much harmful and easy treatable using natural home remedies. This occurs when lower esophageal sphincter fails to hold back the acidic contents from stomach to enter the esophagus. This can be due to high acidic content in stomach or due to weak LES muscles.
- Refractory Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (Refractory GERD): This refers to the type of GERD patients who are unresponsive to the treatment from proton pump inhibitors.
- Nonerosive Reflux Disease (NERD): This is another form of simple GERD which does not cause any permanent harm to esophagus in most cases but can cause irritation, swelling or inflammation of the esophagus muscle lining which can be quite painful. Majority of GERD patients do not fall into this category and can be treated quite easily with home remedies for GERD and lifestyle changes.
- Larygopharyngeal Reflux (LPR): When the LES is not working properly the acid reflux happens from stomach to the esophagus. Similarly, when the upper esophageal sphincter not works properly, the acid reflux is able to reach to the patient's throat and is commonly referred to as indigestion. This is medically referred to as Larygopharyngeal Reflux.
